The Black and Tan Coonhound is an American breed developed in the southern United States, descended from the Talbot Hound and the Bloodhound, and officially recognized in the early 20th century. They are friendly, easygoing, and devoted dogs at home but become intensely focused and determined when on a scent trail. They were specifically developed to track and tree raccoons and other game by following ground and air scents through rugged terrain.
