The Istrian Shorthaired Hound is one of the oldest scent hound breeds in the Balkans, originating from the Istrian Peninsula in present-day Croatia and Slovenia, with depictions dating back to 14th-century frescoes. It is a gentle, devoted, and passionate breed that is affectionate with its family but becomes intensely focused and driven when on the hunt. Developed to track and hunt hare and fox across the rocky Mediterranean terrain of the Istrian coast, it is prized for its fine nose, melodious bay, and remarkable endurance in the field.
