The Fila Brasileiro, or Brazilian Mastiff, was developed in Brazil through crosses of Bloodhounds, Mastiffs, and Bulldogs brought by Portuguese colonizers, with the breed taking shape by the 17th and 18th centuries. They are intensely loyal to their family but exhibit an extreme wariness and aversion to strangers, a trait so prized in Brazil it is known as ojeriza, and they are not recommended for inexperienced owners. This powerful breed was originally used to track and capture escaped enslaved people and large game, and later as a cattle and estate guardian.
