The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen hails from the Vendée region of western France, where it was developed over several centuries from ancient French rough-coated hound stock. They are vivacious, outgoing, and independent dogs with a happy-go-lucky personality and a strong, sometimes stubborn, will of their own. Originally bred to hunt hare and other small game on foot in the difficult brambled terrain of the Vendée, their low-slung body and tough coat allowed them to work through dense underbrush.
