The Lucas Terrier was developed in England in the mid-20th century by Sir Jocelyn Lucas, who crossed the Sealyham Terrier with the Norfolk Terrier to create a more manageable working terrier. It is a friendly, spirited, and sociable dog with a calm temperament compared to many other terriers, making it a pleasant companion. The breed was developed to be a practical working terrier capable of going to ground and hunting small quarry such as rats and rabbits.
