The Basset Artésien Normand originates from France, developed in Normandy and Artois during the 19th century through selective breeding of various French basset-type hounds. It is a gentle, friendly, and somewhat stubborn breed with a calm indoor temperament but a determined and enthusiastic nose when outdoors. This breed was developed for slow-paced hunting of small game such as rabbit and hare, allowing hunters to follow on foot.
