The Portuguese Podengo is an ancient breed native to Portugal, believed to descend from dogs brought to the Iberian Peninsula by Phoenician traders thousands of years ago. They are lively, intelligent, and independent dogs with a playful and affectionate character toward their families, though they retain strong primitive instincts. This breed was developed as a hunting dog used to flush and chase small game such as rabbits through the rugged terrain and dense brush of Portugal.
