The Hokkaido, also known as the Ainu Dog or Do-ken, is one of Japan's oldest native breeds, originating from the northern island of Hokkaido and developed over centuries by the indigenous Ainu people. It is a brave, loyal, and dignified dog with a strong will, deep devotion to its family, and a natural wariness toward strangers that makes it an effective guardian. This breed was used by the Ainu for hunting large game including Ezo deer and brown bears in the harsh, snowy wilderness of northern Japan.
