The Huntaway is a New Zealand breed developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries through the crossbreeding of various working dog breeds brought to New Zealand by British settlers, selected entirely on working ability rather than appearance. It is an enthusiastic, confident, and highly energetic dog with strong working drive, intelligence, and a sociable nature that makes it eager to please when given a job to do. Uniquely among herding dogs, the Huntaway was specifically bred to drive sheep over large distances using its loud, persistent bark rather than silent eye contact.
