The Lupo Italiano, or Italian Wolf Dog, was developed in Italy in the 1960s and 1970s through a selective breeding program initiated by Mario Messi, crossing a female Apennine wolf with a German Shepherd Dog. It is an intelligent, loyal, and highly trainable dog with strong instincts, deeply bonded to its handler and naturally suited to working roles. This breed was developed specifically for use in search and rescue operations in mountainous and wilderness environments by Italian civil protection agencies.
