The Tosa, also known as the Tosa Inu or Japanese Mastiff, was developed in Japan during the 19th century in the Tosa region of Shikoku island through crossing native Japanese dogs with Western breeds such as the Mastiff, Bulldog, and Great Dane. They are calm, dignified, and patient dogs that are deeply loyal to their families and known for their quiet and stoic demeanor. This breed was specifically developed for dog fighting, a sport that was popular and ritualized in Japan, and is still considered a fighting dog breed in some countries.
