Large sizeShort coatModerate sheddingHigh energyHigh barking
The American English Coonhound developed from English Foxhounds brought to colonial America, where hunters selectively bred them over generations to adapt to the rougher American terrain and to hunt raccoon and other game by night. They are energetic, sociable, determined, and friendly dogs with an extraordinarily loud and musical voice used to signal the location of treed quarry. This breed was developed specifically to track and tree raccoons and other North American game, excelling in both speed and endurance during nocturnal hunts.
